Lea Williams to Compete in Yearling Mustang Expo in Reno, NV
Meet Lea Williams and her bay Mustang filly Sierra Nevada
Several times throughout the year, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) holds National Wild Horse and Burro Adoptions. During the middle of May, Lea Williams, favorably known as the Mustang Granny, travelled to Reno, NV to pick up her assigned wild Mustang to train. Williams was assigned a yearling bay filly named Sierra Nevada who until her capture ran wild in the Jackson Mountains in northern Nevada.
This Mustang filly was totally wild when Williams picked her up, but within a week of training, Williams had the filly in-lead. In a short timeframe, this smart little filly began responding to Williams' kind and gentle approach to training and was leading wherever Williams would take her, including outside the pen and in a stall.
The Yearling Mustang Expo is a competition of 50 trainers from all over the US. During the Expo, there will be two classes with three groups of competition: Youth, Open and Professional. Mustangs will be scored in body condition (not conformation) and an in hand competition, including picking up feet, loading in a trailer and leading through a pattern with obstacles. Cash prizes will be awarded and split between the three competing groups. At the conclusion of the competition, these trained Mustangs can be sold at a Silent Auction on Saturday.
During the Expo, Williams will be competing in conditioning and obstacle training course. The top five competitors will then compete against each other and the winner declared. Williams will be competing as a professional trainer.
"I am excited and anxious and hopeful," reports Williams about her trip to Reno. "With diesel at $5/gallon now and the price going up every day, I need to find some sponsors to help with the trip."
If you are able to sponsor this amazing Mustang and her trainer, please send your contributions to Lea Williams - 918 N Christensen Road - Medical Lake, WA 99022.
National Wild Horse and Burro Program
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) protects, manages, and controls wild horses and burros under the authority of the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 to ensure that healthy herds thrive on healthy rangelands. The BLM manages these living symbols of the Western spirit as part of its multiple-use mission under the 1976 Federal Land Policy and Management Act.
One of the BLM’s key responsibilities under the 1971 law is to determine the “appropriate management level” (AML) of wild horses and burros on the public rangelands. These animals have virtually no natural predators and their herd sizes can double about every four years. As a result, an estimated 33,000 wild horses and burros roam BLM-managed lands in 10 Western states, a population that exceeds by some 5,700 the number that can exist in balance with other public rangeland resources and uses. Droughts and wildfires also have a determining factor in the number of wild horses and burros that must be removed yearly.
To help restore the balance, the BLM gathers some wild horses and burros and offers them for adoption or sale to those individuals and groups willing and able to provide humane, long-term care.
